Global-MSI recently completed the manufacture and installation of the petrol station canopy at Tesco Leigh Extra.

The site features a standard 6-Island, 12-pump forecourt arrangement. The canopy was completed over a 7-day period in early August, with the site opening to the public a few days later at this busy petrol station close to Wigan town centre.

Global-MSI were delighted to be awarded a contract in the May 2011 to provide a petrol station sales building and forecourt canopy for East Lancashire Motor Trade Consultants Limited T/A The Kay Group at their high profile site in Formby, Merseyside.

The sales building consists of a structural steel frame, composite cladding to the roof and external walls, the signage ‘mast’ solution over the entrance and a perimeter awning with ‘bullnose’ fascia detail.

The canopy above the fuel pumps is a standard 4-island ‘Startergate’ layout finished in Texaco livery.

Here at Global-MSI, we have several staff members who have had family & friends affected by Cancer and some personally affected by Breast Cancer.
We agreed as a team that we would support the Wear it Pink Day for Breast Cancer Campaign for 2011, in an effort to raise as much money for the charity as possible.
We asked our suppliers and staff for support and have been blown away by the exceedingly generous
response of them.

Global-MSI has recently completed an interesting and quite complex refurbishment of the petrol filling station canopy at the above address.

Global-MSI removed the existing undersheeting, timber support purlins, part of the roofsheeting and the forecourt lighting, and replaced these with steel purlin supports, new under sheeting, roof sheets and energy efficient under-canopy lights.  All electrical and mechanical services within the canopy columns were disconnected and the canopy raised by installing 800mm long stub column extensions. Finally the structural gutters were thoroughly cleaned and painted, with all works completed over a 5-day period to ensure that the service station closure period remained as short as possible.

Global-MSI have been nominated and short-listed for the APEA Business Initiative Award for their temporary handrail system, which is also short listed for the APEA Innovation Award.

Global-MSI is fully committed to improving it’s safety procedures and wants to ensure that all its employees work safely and avoid accidents.

Global-MSI’s greatest risk is working at heights, and by introducing this temporary handrail system has significantly reduced the risk of falls from height.

Global-MSI has had excellent feedback from our site teams who report they feel significantly safer by using this safety feature.

We have received increased orders from clients as a result of our implementation of this new safety feature.

This innovation represents a first in the use of temporary handrails for small works refurbishment.

The design is cost effective, innovative and highly visible method of safe working.

Handrail System

Global-MSI has been short listed for the APEA Innovation Award for designing and implementing the first temporary handrail system to be used at height on Petrol Forecourt Canopies during maintenance works.

Traditionally companies in canopy maintenance and refurbishment utilise temporary safety line systems while working on top of the canopy.

We have committed to the reduction of Working At Height, and are continually reviewing our working methods to reduce the risk of falls from height.

All areas of the business were involved in the design of the system including Technical Engineers, H&S Manager, Project Managers, Production Manager, Operations Manager and Site Operatives.

We initiated this project started in September 2010. A trial site was used to assess the technical and operational success of the handrail implementation.

This is a long-term commitment to safe working.  As we manufacture new canopies, future refurbishment work can be undertaken using this safer system.

We have also developed a retrofitting service where the system can be installed on a significant number of existing canopies, and has been offered to our clients.

Temporary Handrail System

Global-MSI is delighted to be short listed for the APEA Health & Safety Award for designing and implementing visual method statements for our on-site processes.

As the leading Forecourt structures supplier, we have many method statements covering all processes undertaken.

Method statements by their nature must contain a medium to large amount of Information, usually in word form.  The danger is that they are not fully reviewed for each job, as they can be pages long and language can be misunderstood.

The challenge was to make the method statements simple, easy to read and to ensure our  employees and customers understand and use the method stated.

The Health & Safety Department undertook to improve the template by using both photographic means to demonstrate the safe method of working, and utilising a colour coded template to highlight certain key information.

We implemented the first batch of the new format Method Statements at our annual Health & Safety meeting in January 2011, and have been working throughout the year to complete the process.  Feedback from our employees, customers and partners has been excellent and near misses have been reduced since implementation.
